Typically we frantically dig for loose change or stare straight ahead to avoid eye contact or discomfort. Most of us don't look away out of cruelty; we look away because we feel caught off guard.  

 Here is the routine: 

1. Take 5 coin envelopes at the start of the month. 
2. Write a genuine handwritten note of encouragement on the outside of the envelope. ("You are seen," "Stay strong," "You matter" etc...)
3. Add a monetary gift of your choice and place the stack of envelopes in your vehicle. 
4.  When you encounter someone in need, the hesitation is gone. You no longer have to fumble around or look away. 
5. You can address them as Sir/Ma'am and hand them a prepared envelope, as you look them in the eye, and treat them like a neighbor.
